Alexander + Brooklynn-Flint, Michigan

Alexander and Brooklynn were absolutely amazing. I don’t know that I know anyone that would have been able to handle some of the ups and downs of their wedding day as well as Alexander and Brooklynn handled their day. Brooklynn and Alexander-5

Due to illness and weather, important people were not able to make it. The ceremony started 20 minutes late and the weather was super nasty.  But when I asked Brooklynn, “are you nervous at all?” Her response was, “No, I am so EXCITED! I am not nervous at all, I am just so excited!” And at that moment I knew Brooklynn and Alexander were made for each other. It is not usually a common response from anyone on a wedding day. They both handled the ups and downs of their day with such grace and dignity. I have never met two people so patient, kind, gentle and so unbelievably thoughtful. These two gravitate towards each other and have this connection that you can see even when they are in different ends of the room. Brooklynn and Alexander-51

Marriage can be tough, especially when you do not have a support system to turn to when you have questions. What I saw, was a rock-solid support system that Brooklynn and Alexander can turn to in need. Their family is so supportive, loving, gentle and kind. It’s no wonder Alexander and Brooklynn are the same way. Editing these photos was really hard, the emotion and love that surrounds this family is expressed in every photo of them.Brooklynn and Alexander-48

Alexander looks at Brooklynn like she’s the only one in the room, he truly sees her for who she is, his partner, his friend, his companion and most of all the love of his life.

The wedding reception was held at Northbank U of M Flint, in Flint, Michigan.  The ceremony was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.Brooklynn and Alexander-14

I don’t even know where, to begin with, this wedding party. They were rock stars, Brooklynn and Alexander had friends and family step up to be part of the wedding party last minute, travel over an hour to get their outfits, and to stand with them on one of the most important days of their lives. It was such an honor to be a part of such an amazingly graceful group of friends and family.

I really have to give a shoutout to the parents of Brooklynn and Alexander, the love that you showered these two with was absolutely beautiful! I am so blessed to have met such awesome parents and family, you guys are so amazing!Brooklynn and Alexander-9

One last note!

During the toasting Brooklynn’s dad made a comment, “When Brooklynn was little her mom told me that they were at the mall and some kids were making fun of a little girl who had a birthmark on her face. Brooklynn walked over to the little girl and told her, ‘I think you’re beautiful!'”Brooklynn and Alexander-11

And these are the type of people I photographed. Absolutely the most thoughtful, wonderful family.  Brooklynn when my daughter grows up, I hope she’s just like you!

Much love to the newlyweds, I wish you all of the love and joy this world has to offer!Brooklynn and Alexander-41

Chelsea + Jimmy Wedding–Kalamazoo Michigan

My first wedding for 2018 could not have been any better!

I first met these two lovebirds when I photographed their engagement session.  I was a huge fan of these two right from the start!

The wedding day forecast anticipated rain, which changed for the better the day of the ceremony.  On January 27, 2018, the weather was perfect.  For a January wedding day, we had sun, and quite a bit of warmth coming in at a WHOPPING 47 degrees for a winter day. WOO HOO!

Chelsea and Jimmy met at the job they both currently work at.  One of the first things I noticed about Chelsea and Jimmy is that whenever they are within a close proximity of each other Jimmy will grab Chelsea’s hand to hold it whenever he can.  He looks at Chelsea like she’s the only person in the world, no one else, no worries, just calm, pure, love.

Chelsea got ready at their home in Gobles, Michigan.  Jimmy has gone through each room and has remodeled the entire house with his bare hands and Chelsea by his side.  He did his best to make sure the basement was done in time for the girls to get ready there.  Creating a bar, and adding a palette design to each pole in the basement.  The rustic feel fits perfectly with Chelsea and Jimmy.  They are definitely country at heart.

The style for the wedding fit these two perfectly with cowboy boots for the girls and just a vest for the guys.  The ceremony was held in Gobles, Michigan at the Gobles United Methodist Church, that Jimmy’s family attends.  The officiant for their ceremony was Paster John Brooks and Jimmy’s brother.  During the ceremony, they braided rope connected to a cross made by Jimmy with palettes from their yard.

The Grimes have 3 pups Maddi, Ellie, and Sadie.  Ellie was supposed to be the ring bearer and they decided to keep her home so she wasn’t locked away from anyone during the ceremony.

After the ceremony, we scooted back to their home to photograph the newlyweds with their wedding party and their pups.  We also went and re-created their engagement photo holding the Jack Daniels bottle.  After we were able to capture the photographs they wanted we headed to the reception hall which was located at Old Mill in Plainwell, Michigan.

Jack Daniels

There were meatballs, chips, and salsa for an appetizer and a BURGER BAR for the dinner, and dessert was donuts from Sweetwaters.

The toasts were performed by Chelsea’s dad Ed, Best Man and Maid of Honor.

Chelsea gave a speech right before she danced with her dad that was quite emotional.  Chelsea’s dad had to have a major heart surgery in September, all while planning her wedding.  And I can understand how emotional, and stressful this can be during what is supposed to be the happiest time in your life.  Thankfully, Dad (Ed) pulled through quickly and is doing great!

The ‘Party’ started when Chelsea’s brother Ed rapped to Vanilla Ice, Ice Ice Baby and pulled everyone onto the dance floor. He is evidently a pro at this performing it at every wedding he can.  I’m pretty sure you can hire him, just contact Chelsea 🙂

Kelsey & Erik

Congratulations to Kelsey + Erik Swanson!

On December 16, 2017, my very last wedding of the year. Kelsey + Erik was married in a cozy small environment with close family and friends at the stunning Bay Point Inn.

It was cold, and it had snowed the night before leaving a clean blanket of fresh snow that made the lake behind the hotel go on for what seemed like forever. It was an early morning winter ceremony and the clouds gave us an even light, making every area of the grounds fantastic!

So, there’s always excitement during the early mornings of getting ready.  This time it just so happened to be ME that caused all of the excitement.  While we were photographing in the hotel room to create the gorgeous photograph below, we set off the smoke alarms.  I had used ‘Atmospheric Aerosol’ to create a smoky look, and we were able to nail the shot very fast.  As soon as we were done.  BAM.  The alarms went off.  So, a huge thank you to this amazing bride that kept her cool when the alarms went off and were completely unfazed!!!

Kelsey and Erik-2438

During the ceremony I watched close family members wipe away tears of joy, and the toasts were just as amazing.  Father of the groom had one of the most touching speeches I have ever heard.  “Kelsey, thank you for choosing my son!”  Of course I cried, I always do.

Kelsey chose to go with The Backyard Gardner for her floral arrangements and I have to say that these are the best fake bouquets I have ever seen.  And a huge shout-out to The Backyard Gardner for the boutonniere’s as well, they were so easy to put on and take off.  They were great!!!

Thank you again Kelsey and Erik for letting me there to capture your special day!  I wish you both all the blessings!!

Happy Anniversary to Laura and Nick–Kalamazoo Wedding Photography

Happy Anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hunter. I was contacted by a friend asking if I would help photograph her son’s wedding.  So, happy I was there to share the day with them.  It started off a rainy day and then the weather broke.  It ended up being a beautiful day.  The church ceremony was perfect!  I had never photographed a church wedding and had the honor to do so that day.

Being a mother I know how much my boys mean to me and was honored when my friend asked me to capture her sons precious day.  I’ve known Beth Hunter for several years now and she is such an amazing person.  I absolutely adore her and was to honored she thought of me to capture her sons day.

(Funny story, my oldest son’s birthday is actually tomorrow.)

I had the pleasure to sit at the parents of the bride’s table during the reception.  What a lovely couple.  I found out I actually live close to where Molly works, less than a mile in fact. She teaches at a high school not far from my house.

The reception was located at the YMCA Sherman Lake Camp.  My daughter attended 5th-grade camp there and recognized the fireplace right away. The food was amazing and the fruit and vegetable table was so elegant and very fall-ish.  I absolutely loved the s’more station and all of the games on the deck.  This reception was meant to be fun for everyone including the kids that attended. I was impressed with all of the things that people were able to do during the reception.

I think my most favorite part of the reception was when Michigan beat Wisconsin 14-7 and the DJ played the Michigan Fight Song.  The guests erupted in song and it was the official start of the party!

Happy Anniversary Maywan and Nikkita

A year ago today Maywan and Nikkita said ‘I do’.  A good friend of mine Jermaine Jackson contacted me just a couple of days before the wedding asking if I was available to photograph his brothers wedding.  Of course I said ‘Yes’!  This family had recently lost someone very important to them.  Maywan’s mother passed away.  The wedding was an elopement.  Nikkita and Maywan had been together for a while and decided they wanted to make it official.

This wedding was particularly special because Maywan’s brother Jermaine was the officiant. He was up front with his brother on his special day. That’s not an everyday occurrence.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the seats or at the alter.  In fact I even cried.  It was a very beautiful and delicate ceremony held at Kindleberger Park in Parchment Michigan.

After the ceremony we walked around and were able to get some very beautiful photos!

Nikkita was absolutely stunning.  Breathtaking in fact.  What a beautiful person inside and out.  She didn’t even know that it was going to be photographed and when she found out was so thankful.

Maywan was a little late to the ceremony.  However, everyone knew he was coming.  The second he saw Nikkita you could see his heart smile.  She is definitely his other half.

When you love someone and it shows through the photos, I know I have done my job.  The love that these two have for each other is amazing.  Maywan looks at Nikkita like she’s the last soul on Earth.  Their love is what young people dream about!  It was a joy and an honor to be a part of their special day!  I wish them all the happiness this world has to offer!

Damenick and her ‘Joe-Joe-Bear’ are MARRIED!!

OH! MY! GOODNESS!  Could this couple be any more precious?!  The weather was beautiful, it would have been so much hotter if it wasn’t for the crazy wind!  On June 10, 2017, two hearts became one in front of family and friends who traveled all the way across the world to witness this occasion.  It’s not hard to believe these two were meant to be, by the way, Joe looks at Damenick when she walks in the room.  Or the way he looks at Avery their daughter when she’s playing off to the side.  These two can lock eyes from across the room and know what the other is thinking.  I have seen it first hand.

D and J (56 of 135)

The day went off without a hitch Thanks to the wonderful and lovely Lisa Heeter and all of the amazing vendors.  The flower arrangements were from Holiday Floral.  They were stunning and lasted forever considering the heat and the wind. The chair covers were from Julie Fell at Julie’s Chair Covers.  Great quality and absolutely beautiful!  Dj was Rich from Encore DJ. Great music, and super nice guy!  And the ceremony and cocktail music was provided by Adam Newton.  Such a talented Musician.  His voice was so perfect and played the guitar with such ease and grace.  The coordinator from Railside Golf Course was Donna and her lovely assistant Kelsey.  Thank you for being so accommodating, helpful, generous and such wonderful people!

D and J (131 of 135)

I first had the pleasure of photographing Joe and Damenick with Damenick’s side of the family for a family photo session in Fall of 2016.  I was able to meet a ton of family members and it’s easy to fit in with how accepting, patient and kind everyone is.  It’s not every day you meet people that are so laid back and truly believe in what happens, happens. And, are completely comfortable with the ‘go with the flow’ attitude.

D and J (114 of 135)

From the girls getting ready, to the guys getting ready, to the first look, it was a day full of love and laughter.  Friends and family witnessed two hearts becoming one on a day that will be remembered and cherished forever.  It was a joy and pleasure to be such a huge part of their day.  One that I will truly remember forever and will always hold a special place in my heart!D and J (36 of 135)

After all of the necessary items on a wedding day.  We slipped away to take bride and groom photos, and it could not have been any better.  The beautiful venue at Railside Golf Course was perfectly set up for us.  From the trees to the green, to the flowers, stairs, and tunnel.  There is not one thing I would change, and cannot wait to one day go back!

D and J (2 of 2)Love is such a beautiful thing, and when two people are destined for each other, they will find each other.  There is nothing to be done except follow it’s lead…

Happy Anniversary!!!

Hannah and Kaleb Trash the dress (19 of 43)

Hard to believe it’s already been a year since my first wedding, and my first trash the dress session.  Happy Anniversary to the couple that changed my life, and my career.  Happy anniversary to an amazing couple!!

One year ago Hannah and Kaleb said ‘I do’.  I remember it was supposed to rain and all of a sudden the forecast changed.  Kaleb sent Hannah flowers and a note while she was getting ready at the salon and in it, it said, ‘P.S. No Rain Today’.

I have to admit, this was a very emotional wedding for me.  I cried all day long alongside everyone else.  Hannah and Kaleb were surrounded by amazing friends and family.  Their support system is absolutely beautiful!

The wedding took place at Southern Exposure in Battle Creek, Michigan.  The venue was absolutely gorgeous.  All of the flowers were in bloom and amazing property gave us so much to work with.

Hannah’s mom Ellen was such a huge part of her day.  In fact, she is the one I met first.  As a mother myself I know how important it is to make sure your kids have everything they need or want.  And, Ellen was right there to save the day several times. The bond that Hannah and Ellen, her mother share is a bond I hope to have with my daughter as she gets older.

I wish Hannah and Kaleb all the joy and happiness this world has to offer. They were such a joy to work with, sweet, kind and absolutely wonderful!  It’s amazing how ‘just being the photographer’ in a wedding means so much.  I was there to watch their story unfold.  I was there to capture memories they will cherish and remember forever.

This is why I am a photographer.  This is why I love my career!

How expensive are weddings?

Congratulations on your engagement!  Now what?!  Now, you get to plan the most beautiful wedding you have ever dreamed of.  All of those ideas you had when you were little about your father (figure) walking you down the aisle and not a dry eye in the seat.  And all of that costs money…  How much?!  Well according to Google the average wedding costs $26,645.  So, here are some tips on how to save some dough.

Willson, Hannah watermarked-2

  1.  Think about the future first.  On your 10th, 20th or even 50th wedding anniversary.  What will you miss the most, that special cake you didn’t get, the garter you didn’t keep, the family member you are fighting with that you didn’t invite, not having that special dinner you really wanted??  More than likely it will be not getting a wedding photographer.  You think ‘Hey we can have Uncle Bob photograph the wedding and use those photos for the rest of our lives. Only to discover, Uncle Bob doesn’t know how to pose you so you look flattering, or how to edit those photos, and keeps catching you with your eyes closed.  Some mistakes are better left unlearned.
  2. Find out who is willing to help with the cost first.  Sometimes you have family members that will help out with the cost and that ‘will be your wedding present’.
  3. Make sure you know how much total you will have to spend.
  4. MAKE A LIST of the most important items that are MUST HAVES.  And the things that less important.  If having expensive silverware is must have, then you will have to cut costs somewhere else.
  5. Don’t plan your wedding to please other people and Don’t let other people try to please themselves with YOUR wedding.  It happens all too often.  There are usually hard feelings somewhere at some point of the planning process.  Remember this is YOUR day, and YOU and your FIANCEE’s day.

    Sarah Degraw Bridal ShowerWM

Finally, remember even as crazy as it may get on your special day.  This day was meant to be remembered in a good way.  Push the little insignificant details out of the way and enjoy finding your soul-mate and hold onto your Happily Ever After!

Hiring your wedding and engagement photographer tips!!

Ahhh!  It’s that time of year again when the weather warms up, people are outside more, the birds start chirping and the grass gets greener….!  Hopefully soon anyway.  This is my favorite time of year.  When all of the newly engaged couples start contacting me for engagement photos and they start looking for wedding photographers.   Ahh, love is in the air.  Super excited for this year, I have several weddings booked already and I am hopeful to get several more.

So here’s a couple of things I want you be aware of when looking for your photographer.  Make sure you find someone that meets several of YOUR criteria when looking around.

  1.  Make sure that your personalities fit together.  Just because you contacted a photographer and even met with them.  Doesn’t mean that they are the right fit for you.  These are your most precious memories that they are dealing with.  If you are not comfortable with them then it will show in the photos.
  2. Find out how long their turn-around-time is.  This could be very important, depending on if there is a holiday or an important event coming up and you want to give some of the photos as gifts.  You want someone that will meet your time frame.
  3. Can they handle stressful situations.  Sometimes during a wedding a situation will arise, how are they going to handle this disruption to the timeline…
  4. What if they get sick…  Do they have someone that could cover them if something should happen and they are unable to make your special day…
  5. Ok, so you have a photographer in mind and you see their packages and you know what you want.  Customer service is not on the package, Does this photographer have customer service skills, are they willing to deliver beyond the package…
  6. And lastly, what type of editing will they do to the photos?  This is HUGE, because if you have a photo of the entire wedding party and someone’s eyes are closed, will they Photoshop different eyes on them?  You need to know the extent of the editing that they will do before you hire them.
  7. Most importantly COST.  You want something FAST, CHEAP, and GREAT QUALITY.  As the old adage goes, you can pick two of those. What is FAST and CHEAP is not always GREAT QUALITY.  Please remember this.

This is YOUR wedding day, and there are so many important decisions that you have to make.  Make sure you consider all options and remember in 50 years when you look back on your day, what do you want to remember most from it?  The cost, the quality of the photos, the lack of photos, or that you took your time and picked the best photographer for you and your fiancée and received the best quality photographs of a memory that could never be duplicated.

Words for Wednesday (Pocket Square folding)

So, my words for Wednesday are how to fold a pocket square, or any type of fold for that matter.  It’s been a constant pain at almost every single wedding I have attended, or photographed.  I have attached the link that I like to use for this specific reason.  I also, have learned how to fold them, because they are so complicated.

This past weekend I attended a wedding where I folded all the men’s handkerchiefs.  Honestly, it’s one of my favorite moments.  Watching the men try to figure it out.  Because they all have so much fun, and laugh about how goofy some of the folds are.  It’s quite the bonding experience between the men.  Some get the folds right away.  And, some let others fold their square for them.  One of these days I will have to record it.

It’s really interesting the little intricate details that get missed before the wedding and then when the day comes how simple yet complicated the situation can be.  I have dedicated myself to learn the little things that tend to be an issue on the day of the wedding.  I want to make sure that if you have any issues I can resolve them as fast as possible and the little intricate details don’t get forgotten about.

It is my goal as a photographer to make sure that I can help as much as possible.  This is meant to be one of the best and most memorable days for the Bride AND the Groom.  The last thing I want is for anyone to stress about anything o their special day!

Here is the link check it out, practice and be prepared for your special day!!
