Couples Shoot

I was extremely excited when Ellen contacted me to photograph her and her husband, Mark.  Ellen and Mark are Hannah’s parents.  I met Ellen before I actually met anyone else in their family.  Ellen is a teacher, and you can tell by being around her because of her patience and vibrant personality.  A quality someone that works with children must have.

One of my favorite memories of Hannah and Kaleb’s wedding was talking to Mark right before he saw Hannah for the first time.  I knew it was going to be an emotional moment, by the way, he talked about Hannah, that this was his little girl.  He was so happy for her and so excited for her to marry Kaleb.

I made a point of photographing Ellen and Mark where I photographed Hannah’s maternity photos.  I wanted them to share a common special place.  Although neither of them knew it, I pointed it out after the fact.

I always say this, but you cannot pose love.  Either it’s there or it’s not.  And, when it’s there it’s easy to capture.

The weather is always an issue when shooting outdoor photos.  Living in Michigan we never really know how it’s going to turn out.  Will the sun be out?  Will it rain?  Will the ground be wet?  Will it be overcast?  It’s always a guessing game up until the moment.  On this day it was perfect.  The temp was just right, and the weather could not have been better!

Mark informed me that the only ‘kissy’ photo they had was the one on their wedding day.  So, it was only natural to get one.  Mark had just told Ellen all of the reasons why he loved her, and why she was the one.  This is true love at it’s finest!

One request Mark and Ellen had was to get a photo just like their engagement photo.  And, this is their photo, the one we recreated to match their engagement photo.

It’s always important to get photos of you with your spouse, significant other or you with your family.  It’s not always easy to be in the photos, but it is necessary!!

Words for Wednesday (How to love yourself in Photos)

Ok, so here are my words for Wednesday.  They are quite motivational and need to be read several times to get them through.  How to love yourself in photos!

We as humans tend to be the hardest on ourselves.  I’ve heard this time and time again from people.  I will love a photo, show it to them.  And, they HATE it!  Hate everything about the photo.  I go home edit the photo and post it to Facebook.  And then they LOVE IT!  LOVE it to the moon and back, absolutely L-O-V-E IT!  Why?!  It’s not because I edit the photos very much.  I do slight touches here and there. But, for the most part it’s the exact same photo.

There is one reason why I think people dislike the photos at first when they see them in the back of my camera.

  1.  Because they have a complex with themselves:

First and foremost people have a major complex when it comes to themselves.  I have had several photographers that I know take a beautiful photo of this GEORGOUS person.  And, the person hates it!  Because they pick at everything about themselves.  There is this one thing that no matter who takes the photo they will always see it in the photo.

So, I have started saying this to people when I take their photos.

“It doesn’t matter if it is a million dollar photographer that takes your photo.  If you have a complex with something about yourself, you will see it in the photos!”

“With me you don’t have a complex, this is about you!  This is meant to be fun, exciting, amazing, and I give you permission to LOVE yourself!  Love yourself like you always mean to love yourself!”

I don’t take photos for someone to look back at them and think ‘YUCK! I don’t like how I look in that photo!’

And here is the reason why I think they love the photo after it’s posted to Facebook:

  1.  Because they post it to their page and get a bajillion ‘LIKES’ from family and friends.  With everyone saying how great the photo is.  They get that outside gratification that they needed.

The best part about that is when it comes time to do another photo shoot.  They are more relaxed and have more fun the second, third and so on, times.

Well, here it is people, LOVE YOURSELF!  I give you permission to love the photos, to share them, brag about them.  And, most of all to enjoy the time you have with me.  It’s meant to be fun and exciting!

Tip for Tuesday Headshots

It’s not all the time I get in front of the camera.  However, I know it’s good for me.  I suffer from a complex just like everyone and I don’t like my photo taken either.  And then I go back through the photos and I feel so much better about myself.  I think ‘Is that really me?!’  Trust me there are times that someone takes my photo and I am completely disgusted with the way I look.  It takes special posing, patience to get my photo.  This is why I use a professional photographer.  My assistant whom I trust when it comes to my photos.  We do this a couple of times a year for each other to keep fresh headshots.

It is extremely important to keep fresh headshots because when you meet someone in person you want them to recognize you.  Your photo is who they have trusted, and when you meet them and your photo is not even similar to what you look like it’s deceiving and you lose trust with that person.

So, here it is the tips for Tuesdays headshots:  (Or to rock any photo of yourself)

  1.  Make sure you know which side is your best side.  My best side is my left side, hence the photos of the left side of my face.
  2. Push your chin out.  Don’t make a face while pushing your head out, just gently push your whole head out and keep your chin up slightly.  (This also depends on the shape of your face how much to push out or up.)
  3. Photos should be taken from above your eye level to get rid of any possible double chin.  It doesn’t matter how big you are, most people have double chins.  Especially, when they laugh.
  4. Stand on one leg, this will drop one of your shoulders giving you a slight curve.
  5. Stand up straight.  This one is important and so many people forget to do this.  However, stand up straight with shoulders pushing up.
  6. Do something with your hands, place them gently on your face, hold them together, have your thumb hold your belt loop, hands in pockets, arms crossed.  Make sure that your hands are doing something. Even if you can’t see them it will align your body a certain way.

I hope these tips help you to rock your next headshot, selfie, or photo shoot!!!

Tuesday’s Wedding and Dress shoe tip

Ever wear high heels to a wedding, event or anything outside?  It’s the worst isn’t it??!!  I was in a wedding a few years ago in a field.  Here I was wearing this short beige dress, with these super cute silver heels.  And I had to walk the length of the entire aisle on my tip toes.  Every time I put my heels down they went right into the soft dirt.  I had to spend the entire ceremony on my tip toes.  The ceremony was short.  However, my calves were feeling it when all done.  I then had to do wedding party photos in these heels. (Insert Fake Happy Smile Here!)

Fast forward several years…

This year I was at a wedding that was going to be in a field as well.  I looked down and saw this clear looking thing on the heel of one of the brides high heeled shoes.  When I asked her what they were, she told me ‘Solemates‘.  These plastic rubbery covers easily slip on and off your heels.  Not only are these ‘Solemates‘ awesome for in the dirt.  They are just as awesome on steady solid ground.  They help with balance, coordination.  And, lets be totally honest here.  We could definitely use some balance and coordination when we have a couple of drinks.  Which makes them super awesome for wedding receptions!  I have not had to use them.  So, this is not from experience at all.

I personally would purchase them because of the usefulness of these.  Not only are they super useful when it comes to walking in high heels which is a skill all on its own.  They are small and come in different colors to match your shoes.  And, to top it off they come in different sizes as well!  If you plan on wearing high heels for any reason in the near future I recommend looking into these!

Professional Head Shots

This past weekend I was able to take Jared Chambers professional head shots.  He is the new Real Estate agent working for Century 21 on Gull road.  It was a pleasure to meet this young man.  He talked about his girlfriend and his two children, I was able to get him to smile by making him face laugh, which worked very well!  Jared is motivated, and passionate about starting his new job.  I wish him the best of luck in everything he does!

Sweetheart Portrait Session

My husband and I did not have engagement photos, nor did we have many photos of our wedding day.  So, several of our key moments in our lives have very little documentation.  It bothers us but there’s not much we can do now.

However, being a photographer I do try to photograph us as much as possible.  It is hard to get in front of the camera though.  Especially with 3 kids.  Someone is always crying and we have to take many breaks.  I love it though.  It’s challenging and hard sometimes, but my husband I do our best to make sure that we have many photos of each other and the whole family.
